Dialogue or Operation: Stagnancy Continues

A recent avalanche of attacks, killing hundreds of people has opened the flood gates of a widening guerrilla war in Pakistan.Taliban forces have unleashed a string of devastating attacks in last two weeks, in an attempt to shake the nation. The string of attacks over the last 10 days have shown the impact of the killing of Tehreek-e-Taliban chief, Hakimullah Mehsud, in a US drone attack in November last year.Interior Minister Choudary Nisar and PTI Chief Imran Khan  termed this as a drone attack on possible peace talks between the Pakistan government and TTP.The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ruled out the possibility of peace talks with Pakistan as Mullah Fazlullah, the leader of the Swat Taliban, was named the new chief .Mullah Fazalullah is considered as a ruthless hardliner who is mainly against Pakistan Army.
With the recent terror wave, country is in complete chaos.Everyone started questioning the silence, inability and inefficiency of Prime Minister Mr.Nawaz Sharif and demanded government to take immediate action against terrorists.Government officials were of the view that both options – negotiation or military operation, are tough because the rival is not a visible force or party.Prime Minister who at last broke his silence and arrived in National Assembly after almost six months of break, however gave peace another chance or may be the last chance and formulated a four member committee  – comprising of his Advisor on National Affairs Irfan Siddique, veteran journalist Rahimullah Yusufzai, former ambassador and expert on Afghanistan affairs Rustam Shah Mohmand and former ISI official Major (Retd) Amir – to holds talks with the militants. He said that Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan would assist the committee and he himself will supervise.
Many analysts criticized the government as why they wasted so many months in confusion despite the fact that last APC gave full mandate to government for negotiations. Many are of the view that if this decision could have been taken earlier then things could have been much better. However better late than ever lets see what this committee can do.Mr.Raheemullah Yousafzai, one of the members of this committee claimed that he is in touch with one of the close associate of Mullah Fazalullah and is of the view that there are little hopes of any success in the talks as any new attacks from taliban can sabotage the whole process.
Many analysts demanded that these talks should be time framed and government should not adopt its policy of silence as it did in past. And If talks are failed then government should go for all out operation immediately. So the news for the people who were thinking that government is going to announce operation is that stagnancy still continues.

  1. Very good analysis. I wonder if this committee can get a breakthrough in peace talks with TTP looks extremely difficult
